A WORKING MEETING ON RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COURT AND OTHER BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT

A working meeting was held at the hotel “Lopota” in the framework of  CoE project “Support to the Judicial Reform in Georgia”. This project is funded by voluntary contributions of Bulgaria, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Norway, Slovakia and Sweden to support the implementation of the Action Plan 2016-2019 for Georgia. The topics of discussion was interrelation between the court and other branches of government - challenges and strategies.

The participants were addressed by the Head of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia, Mr. Cristian Urse , the Chairperson of the Supreme Court of Georgia and HCoJ,  Nino Gventadze  and  the Secretary of the High Council  of Justice of Georgia Giorgi Mikautadze.

According to Mr.Urse,  improvement of relations between judiciary and other branches of government is connected to implementation of the Judicial Strategy and the Action Plan which should facilitate establishment of independent, impartial, effective and fair trial in Georgia.

In her speech the Chairperson of the Supreme Court of Georgia noted, that successful implementation of judicial reforms envisages  close cooperation between judicial, legislative and executive authorities. The positive outcomes of the cooperation between the judiciary of Georgia, the Parliament of Georgia and the Ministry of Justice instills confidence that reforms will improve the justice system as soon as possible.

The second session of the seminar was dedicated to the topic of the court and media relations.

A British expert Dr. Liv Zhis presented the topic on standards of the Council of Europe, the Case Law of  the European Court of Human Rights  and modern challenges.

 Judge Aneta Arnaudovska presented a report “Mechanism of Reducing Judicial Discretion-a comparative analysis” and participants summarized the results of the conference.
