Workshop for judges, prosecutors and defense attorneys

On 16 February, at Radisson Blu Iveria Hotel, a working meeting was held for judges of common courts, prosecutors and defense attorneys, concerning “Application of pre-trial measures, its challenges in practice and legislation and their compliance with European standards”. The workshop was funded by two EU4 Justice projects-Support to the judiciary and Support to Criminal Justice Reform and with cooperation of the Supreme Court of Georgia, Chief Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia and the Georgian Bar Association.

The participants were welcomed by the chairperson of the Supreme Court of Georgia Nino Gvenetadze, talking about significance of interagency meetings with involvement of donor organizations for implementation of European standards. Another speech was made by a representative of EU delegation, Mr.Peter Dennis. The first session moderator was an international expert Pim Albers that introduced the EU project on criminal justice support. Participants discussed challenges of practice and legislative framework and compliance with European Standards in this regard: prosecutor’s mediation mechanisms, charging imprisonment, verdict, legislative and practical problems review,  statistical data, human rights European standards in arrest and detention. The second session, led by the justice Renate Winter, covered the following: recurring control and appeal of pre-trial measures from prosecutor’s outlook,  recurring control and appeal of pre-trial measures from the judiciary, human rights European standards concerning requalification of pre-trial measures and appeals.

The final session of the meeting included presentation of a draft bill by the Ministry of Corrections and Probation  of Georgia. The sessions were followed by dynamic discussions on the topics covered.
