Opening of the XXII Judicial Conference of Georgia

On January 20, 2018 the XXII Judicial Conference of Georgia was held. The Chairwoman of the Supreme Court of Georgia and HCoJ, Nino Gvenetadze introduced the activity report of 2017 which included Five Year Strategic Plan (2017-2011) and Two- Year Action Plan (2017-2018) adopted by HCoJ. In her presentation Ms.Gvenetadze mentioned important steps and measures related to implementation of the 2017 action plan, in particular, she highlighted the matter of appointing judges for life, and she ensured that in the nearest future HCoJ will review the proposals concerning the selection procedures and criteria for judges. The topics covered by Ms Gvenetadze also included issues of promoting independence and impartiality of judges, their professional development and systems of evaluation, improvement of procedures related to appointing judges for life, issues of raising disciplinary accountability and establishing the institute of an Independent Inspector and expanding Jury institute, implementation of efficient mechanisms for improving communication of the Supreme Court, the District (City) Court and the Court of Appeals with the community and other activities prescribed by the Judicial Strategy. According to the Judicial strategy one of the significant challenges still remains the problem of heavy case load in the Common Courts system and problem of their administration issues. The Chairwoman thanked donor organizations and diplomatic corps for their manifested support and expressed hopes for future cooperation for improvement of judicial system.
