The Chairperson of the Supreme Court of Georgia and the High Council of Justice Nino Gvenetadze met with the Public Defender

On March 7, 2016 the Chairperson of the Supreme Court and the High Council of Justice Nino Gvenetadze met with the Public Defender of Georgia Ucha Nanuashvili.  The current developments of the court system were discussed at the meeting; also, the fixed flaws of the Parliamentary report of the Public defender towards the judiciary and results of the implementation of issued recommendations were reviewed.

At the meeting the parties discussed the drafts of the legislative proposals of the Georgian Constitutional law on “The amendments to the Constitution of Georgia" that is initiated to the parliament by the public Defender, which is related with the expansion of the powers of the Constitutional Court.

Nino Gvenetadze informed to the Public defender regarding the organized legislative activities, which are carried out in order to be fully prepared for enacting of new procedure of interrogation of a person as a witness during the investigation. At the meeting the Chairperson of the Supreme Court and the High Council of Justice also talked about the measures that are to be implemented in the framework of the third stage reform of judiciary.

In addition, within the meeting parties discussed the issues related with the implementation of Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Supreme Court and Public Defender office, which envisage the establishment of high standard of human rights in Georgia; formation of a uniform legal practice and to raise the awareness in educational activities.

At the meeting the Chairperson of the Supreme Court and the High Council of Justice underlined the importance of recommendations and conclusions of the Public Defender in the process of improving the quality of justice. Parties in the active cooperation mode discussed the future opportunities of close consultations with regard to judiciary reform. Deputy of Public Defender Natia Katsitadze attended the meeting.
