On October 17, 2017 at the Plenum of the Supreme Court of Georgia representatives of the Council of Religions under the Public Defender of Georgia held discussions upon problematic issues of freedom of religion and rights equality, in particular, they introduced recommendations addressed to the Judicial Power of Georgia. The meeting was led by the Head of the Court Practice Research and Generalization Department of the Supreme Court of Georgia, Mr. Sandro Jorbenadze. The Department of National Court Practice Research and Generalization of the Supreme Court of Georgia made a presentation of the research covering issues of sentences passed by Common Courts of Georgia, review of civil and administrative cases and presented a final report on current situation, concerning matters of religious intolerance. The Council of Religions under the Public Defender of Georgia introduced some guidelines upon problematic issues, concerning freedom of religion and equality of rights addressing relevant state agencies, educational institutions and the media. The proposed guidelines reflect the Council’s view upon necessary measures to be taken in Georgia for creation, protection and maintenance of tolerant environment, freedom of religion and equality of rights.
The Council of Religion under the Public Defender of Georgia was established in 2005 and presents one of the largest forums of religious confessions. On the one hand, it represents a consulting body of the Public Defender, and on the other hand, it cooperates with different state agencies and organizations. One of the addressees of their recommendations is the Judiciary of Georgia.
