On May 23 of 2016 the Chairperson of the Supreme Court and High Council of Justice, Ms. Nino Gvenetadze hosted the delegation of Prosecutors of Turkey headed by the Chief Prosecutor Mehmet Akarcha. The Ambassador of Turkey Zeki Levent Gümrükçü, Chief Prosecutor of Georgia - Irakli Shotadze, Deputy Prosecutor - Giorgi Gogadze and justices of the Criminal, Civil and Administrative Chambers were present at the meeting.
The Chairperson of the Supreme Court Ms. Nino Gvenetadze informed the members of the delegation on the challenges and current reforms facing the system of judiciary. Ms. Nino Gvenetadze spoke about the arrangements concerning the improvement of the quality of judicial proceedings and independence of Judiciary. She gave a special consideration to the issues of the criminal law reform. “The High Council of Justice, together with the Chief Prosecutor’s Office and Ministry of Justice is starting the process of elaborating of the longitudinal strategy and Action Plan. At the same time, we actively support the suggestions on the criminal policy and reform proposed by the Ministry of Justice regarding the development of the Jury Institution in Georgia” - marked the Chairperson of the Supreme Court and High Council of Justice.
“A special attention is given to the implementation of the decision of the European Courts of Human Rights into the domestic court decisions and the ground for an appeal is being extended with this end in view. The mentioned changes will load the Supreme Court even more” – said Mrs.Nino Gvenetadze in the course of discussing of the legislation amendments being planned within the third phase of the reform. The parties also discussed the matters regarding the Juvenile Justice and electronic allocation of cases.
At the meeting the Chief Prosecutor of the Court of Cassation of the Republic of Turkey introduced to the Georgian justices the system of justice of Turkey and the main aspect of the criminal code of Turkey. The head of the delegation expressed his gratitude to Ms. Nino Gvenetadze for the warm reception and on behalf of the Republic of Turkey invited the Chairperson of the Supreme Court and High Justice Ms. Nino Gvenetadze to take part in the International Conference on the actual problems of Justice, planned on 15-18 October of the current year.
At the end of the meeting the parties exchanged the memorable gifts. The delegation of the prosecutors of Turkey marked, that their official visit to Georgia has the aim of developing of the close and constructive cooperation between the two countries in the sphere of Justice. Within the frames of their visit to the Supreme Court the members of the delegation looked around the historical building of the Court and saw the Museum of Justice.
