On May 4 of 2016 in the Supreme Court was held the round table on the topic of the Institute of Supporters. The meeting was opened and the participants of the meeting were greeted by the Chairperson of the Supreme Court and High Council of Justice Ms. Nino Gvenetadze and the member of Parliament - Ms. Tamar Kordzaia.
The aim of the round table was identification of the problems of different structural units revealed in practice after the adoption of the amendments made to the legislation, concerning the Institute of Supporters, information exchange and discussion of the uniform, complex ways of coping with them. The judges of the Supreme Court, Tbilisi and Regional Courts presiding over the civil cases, attended the meeting, as well as the representatives of the Children’s Foundation of the United Nations, Agency for the Social Service, Judicial Support Service, The High School of Justice, Apparatus of Public Defender and NGO - “ Partnership for Human Rights.”
The Institute of Supporters was introduced according to the amendments made to the Civil Code of Georgia based on the decision of the Constitutional Court of Georgia from the 8th of October of 2014 and “Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.” Videlicet, according to the changes in legislation, the Court is to define an appointor of the Support; Five year transition period is considered for coming into full effect of the above mentioned changes.
The participants of the meeting considered the prospects of development of the Institute of Supporters in the regime of active discussion and defined the specific future steps to be undertaken in this direction. The decision on liquidation of the revealed defects and forming of a working group from all the representatives of the state structures and NGOs participating in the meeting was made during the round table. The working group will conduct its activities in the two directions: - Further improvement and refinement of the changes in legislation and sharing and extending the knowledge in the format of the various training courses and working meetings with the foreign experts and judges.
