School children attended the swear an oath ceremony of judges

On November 1, 2011, swear an oath ceremony of judges was held at the Supreme Court.

Four judges – Bidzina Sturua, Davit Akhalbedashvili, Badri Shonia and Davit Narimanishvili swore an oath before the High Council of Justice and wore the judges gown for the first time. 

The newly appointed judges successfully accomplished the studying course at the High School of Justice.
They will implement their duties in courts of different regions of Georgia.
School children of Rustavi School-Lyceum attended the swear an oath ceremony. The judiciary considers to inform school children and students with the current processes of the court.
With the participation in the swear an oath ceremony, the school children became the participants of one of the most important and responsible day of judges.

Information
regarding the judges appointed in 2005-2011
(by using the new and old rules to select and appoint the judges)

Since the onset of the court reform (in 2005) to present, 154 new judges are working in the court system of Georgia, who have been appointed on the positions under the old and new rules to select and appoint the judges. Besides, until March of 2009, there were 128 judges appointed under the old rule of appointment and since June of the same year, only the graduates of the High School of Justice have been appointed as judges. The High School of Justice has a 10-month-long curriculum, covering the theoretical and practical courses. At present, there are 26 judges employed at the court system appointed under the new rule.
Before their appointments, they held the following positions:
1. 77 (50%) - at the court system (the Common Courts, High Council of Justice, Constitutional Court);
2. 24 (15,6%) - at the advocating offices (advocating office, NGOs);
3. 37 (24%) - at the law machinery (the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, National Board of Security);
4. 12 (7,8%) - at different private or public entities (the National Bank of Georgia, Tbilisi City Hall, Ministry of Health and Social Affairs of Georgia, JSC “Telecommunication Company”, etc.);
5. 4 (2,6%) - law teachers at the Universities.

Out of the 154 new judges 85 are men and 69 – women. Their average age is 33,5 (included the age at the time of their appointment). At the appointment they were of the age of:
1. 28-29 – 23 judges (15%)
2. 30-40 – 116 judges (75,3%)
3. 41-50 – 14 judges (9,1%)
4. 51– one judge (0,6%).

27 of them have taken their examination in general specialization, 54 of them - in the civil and administrative law and 73 of them are attested in the criminal law.

For today 6 of them are working at the Supreme Court, 27 – at the Courts of Appeal, and 121 – at the Courts of First Instance.
