Supreme Court and the Ombudsman signed a memorandum of understanding

On October 29, 2015 in the “Tbilisi Marriot” hotel through organization of the European Councils Georgian office the presentation of two new projects was held. The event was opened and the participants were addressed with welcoming speeches by the head of the European Council office Christian Urse, the deputy chief of the European Delegation Projects department in Georgia Shtepen Shtork, the deputy to the minister of justice Alexander Baramidze, the chairperson of the Supreme Court of Georgia Nino Gvenetadze, the Ombudsman of Georgia Ucha Nanuashvili, and the chairman of the Georgian Advocates Association Zaza Khatiashvili.
On the importance of cooperation between the European Council and the Georgian state talked the Government of Georgias special advisor in the human rights and rule of law Michael Oboil. That was followed with the presentations of the Council of Europe and the European Unions joint new program “Use of The European Convention of human rights and harmonization of national legislation and judicial practice with the European standards” and the new project of the European Councils Human Rights Fund “Improving of the ombudsman apparatus activities in Georgia”.
At the end of the event the Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Supreme Court of Georgia and Ombudsman of Georgia. The memorandum was signed by the chairperson of the Supreme Court of Georgia Nino Gvenetadze and the ombudsman Ucha Nanuashvili.
The memorandum envisages the implementation of high human rights protection standards, the establishment of unified legislative practice, and the raising of awareness in the educational field, also, the cooperation of the parties by utilization of “Court Friend” institution in the common courts and the issues of its effectiveness.
