The Chairperson of the Supreme Court has met with the UN Resident Coordinator

On April 16, 2015 the Chairperson of the Supreme Court met with the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative, Niels Scott. The representative of international organization congratulated the Chairperson on being elected on responsible position and discussed the projects of the UN, which for years have been carrying out in terms of protection of human rights and reforms of judiciary in Georgia.  

The Chairperson of the Supreme Court emphasized the important role of the UN office in the development of an independent and impartial judiciary. Nino Gvenetadze paid particular attention to the legislative package, which has been prepared by the Ministry of Justice within the framework of the third phase of the reform and which is submitted to Parliament for discussion.   

 The Chairperson of the Supreme Court along with the judicial corps has been actively involved with the discussion of the amendments. Among other issues, the Chairperson of the Supreme Court focused on two priority course of the judicial reform, the High School of Justice and the High Council of Justice.

 „Our main vision is focused on establishment of justice based on human rights and creation of learning process conformable to international standards in the High School of Justice. It is important to implement reforms in the High Council of Justice as well, which is connected to the development of procedures for judicial disciplinary proceedings. The role of High Council of Justice in the reform of judiciary is significant.“ – noted Nino Gvenetadze.

The Chairperson of the Supreme Court, during the discussion with the UN Resident Coordinator, stressed the importance of transparency and disclosure policies of the legal proceedings: “     Open cooperation and transparency are the external control tools, which is required by the judiciary and the entire legal proceedings. In this case we are adequate to reality, with the special role and purpose of the media, I think we can achieve certain success.”

At the end of the meeting, the UN Resident Coordinator expressed his readiness that his office, with the usage of different forms of cooperation, will be actively involved in the process, which will serve the purpose to establish an independent and impartial judiciary.
