The High Council of Justice Appointed 12 New Judges

On November 19, 2013, the session of the High Council of Justice was held at the Supreme Court of Georgia.
According to the agenda of the Council session it was planned to vote for the candidates. Today, the Council Members voted for the 59 candidates, among of them 18 candidates were the listeners of the High School of Justice, and 41 candidates were those, who took part in the competition for the selection of candidates for judgeship. If the 10 members out of 13 members of the Council would vote for the candidates, the candidate would be considered as already chosen.
The Council Members elected 12 candidates by secret ballot, who the next week by the decision of the Council, will be appointed on the judge vacant positions in the courts of various regions of Georgia.
According to the Councils decision, the number of necessary votes for the appointment on judge position received the following candidates: Germane Dadeshkeliani, Giorgi Mirotadze, Levan Mikaberidze, Tsitsino Kikvadze, Murtaz Meshveliani, Natalia Nazghaidze, Gocha Putkaradze, Merab Ghviniashvili, Nino Sharadze, Nana Chichileishvili, Khatuna Khomeriki, and Nana Jankhoteli.
The Chairman of the Supreme Court gave a negative assessment to the Councils decision. “This was a very bad result, because we assumed we could appoint at least 20-25 judges. Considering that the office term of 15 judges is recently expired, in fact, we could not even fulfill a small part of the existed vacancies. Currently, when the court system is overloaded with cases, with the appointment only 12 new judges, the current situation will not be changed,” - declared Mr. Konstantin Kublashvili at the end of the session.
After the Constitution amendments came into the force the judges are appointed to the judge position on 3-year probation period. At present, 242 judges carry the judge authority within the Georgian court system (all three instances).
