International Judicial Conference at the Sheraton Metechi Palace Hotel

On September 27, 2013, International Judicial Conference was opened at the Sheraton Metechi Palace Hotel. The Conference will last two days. The Chairman of the Supreme Court of Georgia Mr. Konstantin Kublashvili and the Minister of Justice Ms. Tea Tsulukiani welcomed the invited international experts, representatives of the donor organizations and the representatives of Georgian government, as well as judges who were participants in the Conference. The Ambassador of European Union Mr. Philip Dimitrov, the Ambassador of the USA in Georgia Mr. Richard Norland, the Ambassador of Germany in Georgia Mr. Ortwin Hennig, the Head of Council of Europe Office in Georgia Ms. Caterina Bolognese and the Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Inita Paulovich in their opening remarks highlighted the role and the importance of independent judiciary.

Independent and transparent judicial system is one of the most important cornerstones of the rule of law and the rule-of-law state. The United Nations, the EU and its member states, the United States expressed their full support to Georgian Governments declared willingness - to promote judicial independence and strengthening the role of the judges in the management of the Judiciary, because this is one of the main basis of democracy and the rule-of-law state.

Within the frame of conference there will be discussed the issues about the independence and transparency of the judicial system, professional progress and development of judges, as well as judicial ethics and liability issues. A separate session will be devoted to the teaching and training of judges and to the discussion on educational institution.

The Conference participants will have the opportunity to get to know the best practice of the functioning of international judicial system, which will be introduced by the Judge of Dresden Court of Appeals Mr. Ulrich Hagenloch, the EU expert Agnieszka Milarti, the US Judge Timothy J. Balandi and by the other international experts. The Georgian experts and colleagues will also express their opinions and recommendations.
