Presentation of Legislative Amendments Related to the Judiciary

On September 19, 2013, the meeting of the group of cooperation with the courts was held at the Hotel “Radisson Blu Iveria". The First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court of Georgia Mr. Zaza Meishvili presented the package of legislative amendments for the discussion prepared by the Georgian Judiciary to the invited international organizations and NGOs. The meeting was opened by the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Georgia Mr. Konstantin Kublashvili.

One of the most important part of the Package of Amendments proceeds from the Constitution Amendments that were introduced in 2010 and which will be launched in October 2013 as a result of the presidential election, from the moment when the newly elected president will give the solemn oath ceremony. The aim of these amendments is defining the rules of the appointments of judges for life.

According to the amendments, the Judiciary has also initiated the changes to the Law on Remuneration of the Judges of Common Courts of Georgia, which provides increasing the salary for the judges of all the instances of Common Courts of Georgia.

The legislative amendments also relate to the improvement of social security guarantees, to the creation of the new pension system and compensation of the common courts judges, which will eventually provide decent conditions for judges, as in the case of the expiration of the office term as also in case of personal application where he/she requests the termination of the office term due to poor health.

The Judiciary is proposing the initiative, which will improve the further process of judicial disciplinary proceedings. 

In order to improve the rules and the process of the recruitment and the training of judges, there are also prepared the package of amendments that will increase duration of study course at the High School of Justice and the important part of the increased duration will be the internship period. The amendment relates to the procedure of the appointment of the Students of the High School Justice as a judge.
