Meeting with the Experts of the Venice Commission

On February 6, 2013 the Chairman of the Supreme Court of Georgia Mr. Konstantin Kublashvili welcomed the experts of the Venice Commission.

The experts of the Venice Commission Mr. James Hamilton, Mr. Nicolae Esanu and Ms. Charlotte de Broutelles discussed the draft amendments to the organic law on courts of general jurisdiction with the Chairman of the Supreme Court.

After the meeting, in the interview with the media representatives Mr. Konstantin Kublashvili stated: “We had fruitful discussions with the experts of the Commission. We hope that the Commission will consider our assumptions regarding the project. We agree with a large part of the proposed changes initiated in this project, but there are issues that we will never agree. That is, these issues are contrary to the principles of the judicial independence”.

The Venice Commission is actively cooperating with the judiciary of Georgia. Last week, the President of the Commission Mr. Gianni Buquicchio held the meetings with the court representatives, as well as the representatives of the executive and legislative branches of Georgian government.
