Workshop for the journalists from west Georgian region

On 5-6 July, 2012, the workshop on “Media and Jury Trial” was held in Kutaisi. The U.S. Department of Justice and the USA Embassy in Georgia provided organizational and financial support of the event. The workshop was intended for the media representatives from west Georgian region and aimed to provide media with the information about the Jury Trial.
The participants were from the Supreme Court of Georgia, representatives from the U.S. Department of Justice, prosecutors and practicing lawyers.
Among the guest speakers were: Mr. Jared C. Kimball – Legal Advisor for the U.S. Department of Justice; Mr. David O. Carter – The Federal Judge of California; Mr. Larry Welborn – Journalist, President of Media Study Centre of California; Mr. Zaza Meishvili – The First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Court of Georgia. The speakers were focused the topics, such as: Maintain the balance between the freedom of Media and impartiality of Jury Trial according to the example of the USA and Georgian Courts; the role of Media in Jury Trial and what are their rules.
The journalists had an opportunity to receive the firsthand information from Georgian and international experts on these issues, as well as on the other questions.
