Round Table On State Security Issues

On September 25-26  a round table meeting organized by UNHCR and EC was held in Tbilisi on the following topic: “Addressing National Security Concerns without Undermining Refugee Protection ” The meeting was attended by judges, state security officers and migration service representatives from six countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine).  The participants were welcomed by Cristian Urse, head of Council of Europe Office in Georgia,  Johannes van der Klaauw, the UNHCR Regional Representative in the South Caucasus, Nino Javakhadze, deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia. The meeting content included compliance of national legislative frameworks concerning refugee protection issues with international standards and national approaches in this direction. Other topics covered were: state security, combating terrorism and extradition issues. The two-day working meeting went on with active involvement of the participants, including the staff of the generalization and international court practice unit of the Supreme Court of Georgia. This unit actively collaborates with local office of UNHCR and currently they are doing research studying compliance of national court practice on cases of asylum- seekers with international standards.
