Meeting with Representatives of Donor Organizations

On January 10 2018, the Chairwoman of the Supreme Court of Georgia, Nino Gvenetadze, held a meeting with representatives of donor organizations: EU, UN, U.S Embassy, USAID and GIZ. The topics covered included projects and plans to be accomplished in 2018: issues of promoting independence and impartiality of judges, their professional development and systems of evaluation, improvement of procedures related to appointing judges for life, issues of raising disciplinary accountability and establishing the institute of an Independent Inspector. The participants also discussed issues of sharing European court practice in the field of human rights protection, improving  criminal law legislation and expanding functioning of the Jury institute.

One of the activities from the Action Plan concerning issues of increasing  judge independence is study visits for judges to the USA and inviting American judges to Georgia for sharing professional experience and strengthening closer relations.   The representatives of donor organizations also focused on activities that facilitate efficiency of judicial functioning and reduction of the caseload and implementation of electronic case distribution. The Chairwoman of the Supreme Court of Georgia expressed willingness for regular work meetings of this kind with donor organizations for effective communication and coordination.
