The Third Meeting of the Judicial Reform Working Group in Borjomi

The Judicial Reform Working Group held its third meeting in Borjomi on December 3-4 2017. It was attended by representatives of the High Council of Justice, the Parliament of Georgia  and the Ministry of Justice of Georgia.  The chair of the Parliament, Mr. Irakli Kobakhidze opened the meeting and focused his speech on constitutional changes contributing to expanding independence and impartiality of the judiciary. The Chief Justice and HCOJ, Ms.Nino Gvenetadze greeted the participants and spoke about strategies for judicial reforms outlined by the Action Plan for 2017-2021 within EU/Georgia Association Agreement.  Aleksandre Baramidze, the First Deputy Minister of Justice also greeted the audience and highlighted the importance of the third wave of the judicial reforms elaborated by the Ministry of Justice. Mr.Giorgi Mikautadze, the Secretary of HCOJ focused on significance of reducing backlog of cases and court delays.

The meeting was led by Mrs.Eka Beselia, Chair of the Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament. Representatives of international organizations also attended the workshops: Laura Berger, USAID’s Acting Director of the Office of Democracy, Governance and Social Development, Peter Danis, Programme Manager at EU Delegation in Georgia and Christian Urse, the Head of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia that addressed the meeting with opening remarks.

The Working Group meeting was organized by the Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament,  Council of Europe “Support to the Judicial Reform Project”, “EU for Justice” Project, and the USAID funded EWMI Promoting the Rule of Law in Georgia Program,  Programs of German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) and U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).
